Latin name: Elaeagnus multiflora
Plant Family: Oleaster (Elaeagnaceae)
Lifespan: Perennial
Origin: East Asia
Growing: Since it’s a fruit producing crop, it does best in sunny positions. It can withstand part shade well though. Can grow in both poor and rich soils as long as they are well drained. Drought tolerant.
Edibility: Our favorite berry, period. Enough said.
Permaculture Uses: All members of the Elaeagnus family are nitrogen fixing, making them a valuable addition to a food forest. Can withstand growing in the shady understory of a fruit tree and still produce fruit.
