Latin name: Scutellaria laterifolia
Plant Family: Mint (Lamiaceae)
Lifespan: Perennial
Origin: North America
Growing: Skullcap is a perennial flowering plant in the Mint family which does well in rich, moist soil. It prefers partial shade and can even tolerate full shade.
Medicinal Uses: Harvest the above ground portion of the plant the summer to make tea and tincture. Skullcap is a wonderful herb for insomnia, pain (specifically headaches), muscle spasms, stress and panic attacks. It's best used fresh so tincturing the herb is usually the best way to go. Even though the tea of the fresh plant is a much stronger sedative.
Permaculture Uses: Great ground cover plant for moist and shady habitats.
