Valerian, European (Valeriana officinalis)
Latin name: Valeriana officinalis
Plant Family: Honeysuckle (Caprifoliaceae)
Lifespan: Perennial
Origin: Europe
Growing: European valerian grows just about anywhere, as long as the soil is well drained. If planted in full sun, the plant can exceed 8 feet in height. Incredibly easy to grow.
Edibility: Not used as an edible.
Medicinal uses: It’s roots are harvested in the fall and are a strong sedative for most people. A small percentage of people who take it experience the opposite effect.
Permaculture Uses: Even though it’s not in the aster or carrot parsley families, it’s one of my top 3 or 4 beneficial insect attractors in my garden. It produces a lot of biomass for mulch and flowers twice within one growing year. While the roots may smell like sweaty gym socks, the flowers release an amazing smell in the garden. It’s one of my favorites.
